What they did
1) Obtain a scan of the historical document; for a register, include the column headings and identify the ancestor's row. 2) Upload the same document to Claude and Gemini and request a translation. 3) Compare their readings and combine the useful parts, checking names, dates, and column meanings against the image rather than selecting the more confident answer. 4) When a reading conflicts with visible handwriting, point out the specific letters and request a revised transcription and translation. 5) Keep the corrected reading with the original image for further family-history research, preserving uncertainty where the handwriting remains unclear.
How it went
In the author's tests, Claude sometimes returned partial or erroneous readings, while Gemini provided a more useful column-by-column translation. A later correction changed a misread surname.
Worth knowing
A commenter warned that different models can share the same error; agreement between them does not independently verify a record.
