What they did
1) Use the employee-perks flight app as the source for standby availability, since regular flight apps do not show the information needed. 2) Ask Muse to monitor the relevant flights for changes and send short Messenger updates to a family member. 3) Keep the monitor running as departure approaches; Muse increased its check frequency and notified the traveler when the first flight showed Y0 (no vacant seat) or a gate changed. 4) Use the updates to switch to a flight with a seat and continue the trip.
How it went
The author reported boarding two flights, avoiding one Y0 flight, catching one gate change, and not having to refresh the app. They still made it to Vancouver.
