Label customer emails by sentiment inside a spreadsheet

At a glance

What they did

1) On a computer, open Google Sheets using an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan with AI functions enabled. Put the email text to analyze in column D. 2) In an adjacent empty cell on row 2, enter an AI formula whose instruction requests a positive, negative or neutral label and whose range argument is D2. The syntax is =AI(instruction, range), with the instruction enclosed in quotation marks. 3) Fill the formula down for the other email rows, select the formula cells and choose Generate and Insert. 4) Review the labels beside the original messages. When an input changes, select the affected output and use Refresh and Insert to regenerate it; keep the reviewed labels in the sheet.

Worth knowing

The function receives the referenced range rather than your entire spreadsheet or Drive. Output is text, embedded AI formulas are unsupported, and a generation selection processes at most 350 AI cells.
