What they did

1) Scan the photograph and open it in Photoshop. Lock the original background and select that image layer. 2) Open Filter > Neural Filters > Photo Restoration and download the filter if needed. Adjust image enhancement, facial enhancement, and scratch reduction. Choose New layer as the output and click OK to preserve the original pixels. 3) Add an empty retouching layer. Repair marks with the Spot Healing Brush using Sample All Layers and Content Aware. For stubborn damage, use Clone Stamp with Current layers and below. 4) For optional colorization, create a merged visible layer with Control+Alt+Shift+E on Windows or Command+Option+Shift+E on Mac. Apply Neural Filters > Colorize and set the resulting colorized layer's blending mode to Color. 5) Compare the restored image with the original, then export a JPG, TIFF, or PNG while retaining the untouched background.

Worth knowing

The tutorial recommends small brush strokes and separate adjustment layers so later corrections remain manageable.
