Build and port an isometric game with Grok Bot

At a glance

A developer used Grok Bot to prototype an ESP32 game, then rewrote the Nintendo DS port for hardware-friendly rendering. This workflow is listed under game development, embedded systems, Nintendo DS, porting.

What they did

1) Give Grok Bot the target hardware and constraints: an ESP32-32E Cheap Yellow Display at 480×320, a Bluepad32 gamepad, and the available memory limits. 2) Work with it on the game mockups, code, debugging, sound, scenes, and printable case design; build and flash the ESP32 version, then test it yourself. 3) For the Nintendo DS port, provide the devkitARM/libnds target and have Grok Bot adapt the renderer to DS tile layers, hardware sprites, fixed-point math, and sound channels. 4) Run the DS build in melonDS and review performance and the generated README and release files.

How it went

The author reported that Grok Bot completed the mockups, code, debugging, case design, and write-up in about 1.5 hours of build time. The first DS port ran at about 12 fps on real hardware; after the rewrite, the game ran at 60 fps in melonDS. The author handled flashing and testing.

Worth knowing

The 60 fps result is for the melonDS emulator; the source does not claim that frame rate on a physical DS.
