Reconcile a family dashboard against its spreadsheet and broker reports

At a glance

A designer uses Claude Code to build a family money dashboard while retaining the spreadsheet and checking every derived figure against its source. This workflow is listed under Personal Tools, Money & Bills, Data Validation.

What they did

1) Give Claude Code a copy of the family workbook and manually downloaded broker reports. Require a data dictionary before application code, and ask it to surface ambiguous formulas. 2) Resolve the savings-column convention: the first row is a deposit and subsequent rows are withdrawals. Read raw Sheet values to avoid Italian decimal-format errors. 3) Add flat tabs fed by the existing sheets; build the phone views from those tabs. Refuse edits to formula cells. 4) Validate imported report headers, contract identities, totals and fund-value arithmetic. Reimporting the same file must change nothing; conflicting figures for the same date must stop the import. 5) Generate a side-by-side reconciliation against source cells and reports, resolving every difference before completion. Host privately with two allowed emails and server-side filtering of each person's view.

How it went

The author reports 50 matching checks, two explained differences and none left unexplained.

Worth knowing

Broker exports remain manual. The infrastructure administrator can technically access the underlying family data.
