What they did
1) Start a Claude Code terminal session and provide the race goal, running history, available training days, desired intensity and nutrition context. 2) Ask for a week-by-week training plan. Keep the conversation running where practical and checkpoint it when needed. 3) Record each completed workout and reflections in a training log. Periodically ask Claude to read that log, revise the plan and explain its suggestions. 4) Feed back schedule conflicts or concerns to steer revisions. After the race, ask for an analysis of performance and areas to improve.
How it went
The author reports four months of this workflow and a 2:53 Napa Valley Marathon, five minutes faster than their previous best.
Worth knowing
Claude once calculated a pacing plan that missed the goal by 30 seconds while claiming a 30-second buffer. The runner explicitly recommends checking its output.
