Group a grocery list into store sections with local embeddings

At a glance

A Mealie community member built a sidecar that assigns shopping labels and remembers manual corrections. This workflow is listed under Groceries, Household Organization, Self Hosting.

What they did

1) Have Docker, Mealie v2, and a valid token from Profile → API Tokens. Create grocery-section labels through Profile → Manage Data → Labels. 2) Create an .env file with host set to the tagger's reachable host:port, mealie_url set to the Mealie address, and mealie_api_token set to your token. Both services must reach each other. 3) Run docker run -p 8081:8081 --env-file ./.env cm226/mealie-auto-tagger:0.2.0. At startup the service registers Mealie notifications for shopping-list and label changes. 4) Add groceries normally in Mealie. The sidecar embeds item and label names, chooses a similar label, and writes it back through the API. Review the grouped list and manually correct mistakes; stored overrides guide later occurrences.

How it went

The discussion progressed from a tested embedding prototype to a published sidecar implementation.

Worth knowing

Prototype classifications included sweet potatoes as bread. The linked installation instructions target Mealie v2; newer-version compatibility is not established there.
