Run Microsoft VS Code Server inside a Coder workspace
At a glance
Coder’s blog shows wiring Microsoft’s VS Code Server into a Coder template so developers get browser VS Code with legal access to the Microsoft Extension Marketplace—including Copilot and Pylance—on cloud workspaces. This workflow is listed under sponsor, devtools, ide, cde.

What they did
Add the VS Code / code CLI binary to a container image or download it from a Coder Terraform template, then start Microsoft VS Code Server with the code CLI serve-web subcommand so the editor UI is available in the browser. Declare a coder_app Terraform resource (icon, name, listen port) so VS Code Server appears as a clickable app on the workspace dashboard. Optionally auto-install Marketplace extensions in the template startup script. Use Coder Registry Terraform modules for code-server and Microsoft VS Code Server, or a community template that lets the user choose web VS Code (code-server vs Microsoft VS Code Server) at workspace creation.
Worth knowing
Non-Microsoft web IDEs such as code-server legally cannot connect to Microsoft’s VS Code Extension Marketplace; they need Open VSX, a private marketplace, or vsix files. Extensions like GitHub Copilot and Pylance are often missing from Open VSX, which is why enterprises pick Microsoft VS Code Server when Marketplace access is required. Local VS Code still wins on shortcuts, latency, and reconnect behavior; web VS Code wins on zero local install and stronger endpoint-control stories.
